The reason behind a person initially taking drugs can vary and while the action itself is voluntary: the eventual drug addiction is essentially involuntary. Drug addiction is a complex and chronic disease, a brain disease, which changes the way the brain functions. Drug addiction, much like chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes, disrupts healthy, normal functioning organs. This has harmful consequences that are both preventable and treatable (Branch, 2011, pp.263-265). Drug addiction is considered a brain disease as drugs change the brain structure and how the brain operates. These changes of the brain can be lifelong and can lead to the destructive behaviour seen in drug addicts (Perry, 2011, p.1). This essay will argue that addiction is in fact a disease rather than a behavioural disorder. Addiction is a brain disease which is expressed in behavioural ways (Leshnar, 2010, p.100). I hope we get to do some of these things while we are camping out for the first week. I wonder if we will even need tents or if we will just be able to sleep under the stars on a warm sandy beach. I would like to experience what other places around our country are like and this is a great opportunity to do so. I always thought that Hawaii was much smaller than it really is and was always worried about Tsunamis clearing it off. But after researching the Islands I realize that Hawaii is much larger than I thought. In fact, while I was researching Hawaii I found that from east to west Hawaii is the widest state, which is very cool to look at it like that because it is an island. Another reason I would like to go is I would really like to see a volcano. What better place to explore and learn about volcano`s than Hawaii? I think it would be exciting to see the hardened black lava fields and even hot lava spilling out of an active volcano into the ocean. I have always seen on television the volcanoes in Hawaii and would like to learn first-hand how the islands were created by volcanoes and why they continue to grow. I looked up The City of Refuge on Google and I`ve always wanted to see the giant Tiki`s that are there. I would like to learn more about the City of Refuge, what happened to it, and what it was used for. I wonder how they carved the Tiki`s, it must have been a long process. I wonder how they make the Tiki`s today. I am very curious about the farms on Hawaii. I wonder what they grow for fruits and vegetables. Will it be like what we grow in Vermont, probably not, I imagine it to be very different than what we have here in Vermont. I hope that we can to try some of the fresh fruits and vegetables that they grow on the organic and traditional farms. I wonder if the produce will taste different between the two farms and how different it will taste to what I am used to at home. I love gardening at home with my family. Sometimes I will plant a little garden of my own and tend to it on my own or with my little sister. I think I would really enjoy that part of the trip since I really enjoy it at home. In conclusion, I think this would be a really good learning experience for me if I was to go on this trip. It would be like traveling to a new country but still in the United States. Learning the culture of the Hawaiian people and seeing how they live would be really cool. A Comparison Between Two Complementary Poems Essay The two complementary poems Old Father and Island Man are based on the subject of two diverse men who are coping with an experience of migrating to another country. In this coursework we will discuss these poems, then compare, and contrast their theme and language. Hugh Boatswains Old Father appeared in an anthology called Writing in 1978. Boatswains work speaks to the condition of the racial tensions in the 70s and engages, in sparse poetic form, in much of the cultural analysis. Boatswains poems demonstrate the importance of creativity, cultural transaction, and transition in the historicizing of West Indian migration and settlement in Britain. The poet has used a narrative description in the poem to portray his views and thoughts to the members of the audience. The poem relates to a series of events of old father in a chronological order of his life. The poem depicts the livelihood and culture of a person from a distant atmosphere and surrounding who goes through a lot of hardships in the beginning due to the unknown environment. The poet has then given a brief sketch of his adaptation to the society and how he changes to accept those adaptations. The poem creates a depressing feeling in our hearts as the poet describes how old father forgets his culture and roots by his behaviour. The poet then discusses how old father bought a turning point in his life and started changing his lifestyle to get more accepted in the society. This is indicated by the words Old Father feet begin to shift. His roots have no meaning now (Line No. 10 and 11). This is also an example of one of many metaphors in the poems, i.e. his feet are not actually shifting but his attitude is changing and he is accepting his situation in the society and is trying to improve it. In this process he is leaving nothing out, to the extent that he is ready to change his values, beliefs and ethical values to receive acceptance. He then discusses about old fathers personal and love life, he also brings up the point of how he changes his attitude towards his own friends of his race. Boatswain has added a variety of characters to the poem. Even though the vagueness of details of the character we can say that Old Father was undignified to an extent. The whole image is cojourned by the term blonde relieving his change in attitude and lifestyle to be considered indecorous. The poet has chosen his words very particularly and has also considered the arrangement of these words. He has used a varied range of figures of speech like metonymy and personifications but has highly considered the use of metaphors. These figures of speech and choice of worlds create a rhythmatic design; this maintains the reader with an interested attitude. A lot of attention is given to the use of punctuations. Boatswains way of describing and explaining imagery is noteworthy. For example Cold bite him hard (Line No.2), this shows how painful the weather is to this Caribbean man in the beginning of his arrival. We can see how Boatswains use of language is very descriptive but concise and effective. The other poem Island Man is a piece of poetry written by Grace Nichols. She was born in Guyana and came to Britain in 1977. She writes this poem in context to a Caribbean man who has settled in London but still wakes up to the sound of the sea and the tranquillity of his native island. Island Man consists of a wide range of sounds and images to express the Caribbean mans feelings and thinking. For example the sound of the blue surf and the steady breaking and wombing (Line No.3 and 5) are good examples of his use of language and images for the description of his feelings. This poem is also told in a narrative manner but unlike Old Father the poem is more spontaneous. The poem is bought out in the form of a dream. A number of images are described to show how he imagined himself in his native island where there was no hindrance or disturbance but peace and tranquillity, whereas the atmosphere in London was completely contradictory to his dream. Therefore when he wakes up and enters the world of reality where he is back in London and hears the roar of the cars and screeches of the wheels instead of the sound of the sea he just says Another London day (Line No. 19). He probably says this as he has been living in London since a long time and is now frustrated with his usual rut and wants to get out of it and return to his paradise like island. His attitude towards this new environment is not so enthusiastic. This is indicated by the words groggily groggily (Line No. 11). He has already seen the usual busy days of London and has accepted them in his life and has acknowledged this new surrounding. But a sense of frustration has aroused and his crave for his native island just became greater than before. Both the poems hold a lot of similarity of cultures and attitudes towards the new migration. Both of them share unhappiness in this new environment of theirs. Both of them also discuss the bitter weather. But old father moves on in his life whereas in Island Man we will notice that there is not much of progression in the story. It is just a dream whereas the whole life of old father is discussed in the other poem. Hence a lot of contradictions are in the poem. Also the language and use of punctuations is very different. In Old Father punctuations are given a lot of importance and are very proper whereas in Island Man the poem consists of no punctuations at all. It forms more of a spontaneous attitude and also considers the lazy morning attitude of a person. Therefore as this is a dream the poet has very well described this quality and has also set a sense of spontaneous feelings and emotions. He is an example to his people (Line 41, Old Father), these were the words used to describe old father and his behaviour. It is the opinion of a white English racist person. This opinion can be adapted in two contradictory perceptions. The white people may say it in the context that every person from another country, another culture should act like him. They should also adopt the behaviour and culture of the country they live in. The contradictory statement to this would be that the white people are saying that he was a person who was ready to change for his benefit of himself and in the end of the day for h is own betterment he would forget his friends. Hence they jump to the conclusion that he is just an example of those people who are of his culture and each would do anything for their own personal benefits forgetting their personal beliefs and culture. In the end I would conclude saying that both the poems state a moral towards us. In Old Father we can say that a man should adapt towards his surrounding but that does not mean we should forget who we are, what is our identity. Whereas in Island Man we can see that a man has come to another country but still has not let go of the memories of his own countries and hence is not able to move on and adapt the good qualities of the country he is living with. Hence we should learn from this poem that thinking about our past and not moving on would just lead to frustration and everything would go wrong. Hence we should keep up the pace in life and never look back and ponder.

The advertisement that I have chosen is the ‘Impulse’ anti-perspirant spray advertisement that was in Glamour magazine, which has an audience of stylish young women. The advert is targeted at the women who would read a magazine like Glamour because it is a women’s fragrance and because the picture at the centre is of a young beautiful woman. It is based on the same idea as the television advertisement for this product that was on at the same. The television advertisement is about a woman who keeps her spray in her handbag. When she opens her bag to use her deodorant, a tribe of little people who live in her bag look up out of her bag at her. They had been living around the aerosol can as if it was a totem pole and they believed that the woman who some times looked down on them from above was a goddess looking down from the heavens. The advertisement that I have chosen shows the scene from the television advertisement where she looks down into her bag and is worshiped by the tribe. The image of the woman and the product are at the centre of the advertisement. It was done in this way so it would grasp the attention of the reader, as the images are the most important parts. The image and text are mainly coloured in shades of gold, which is a colour that suggests wealth and holiness. This emphasises the theme of worship and godliness that is depicted in the advertisement. The advertisement relies on the slogan and image at the centre to get the attention of the reader and to get the right effect. The image is of a pretty young woman with light shining around her to suggest that she is holy and that she is looking down from heaven. The people of the tribe are looking up at her and praising her with their hands raised high. This shows that she is highly respected. Also the tribe are beneath her, which suggests that she is powerful. These are the qualities that reader of the advertisement aspires to when they see it in the magazine. On closer inspection of the picture it can be seen that everyone in the tribe is male. Because it is a tribe of men that is worshipping her, the advertisement is suggesting to the reader that the product will make the user more attractive to men. The advertisement gives a compliment to women in the slogan. â€Å"Summon your inner goddess,† suggests that the reader has an inner beautiful and powerful element that is attractive to other people. The slogan is in large capital letters and is bright and bold. This is because it needs to be highly visible as it is an important part of the advertisement. The rest of the writing, apart from the product name, is very small because it is important to capture the reader’s attention first to gain a larger audience for the advertisement. The details can be described later after people have become interested. There are few words on this advertisement as it relies mainly on the image and slogan to get its point over to the reader. This makes the image more striking and so more likely to catch the reader’s attention. The lack of words can be good because people generally do not want to read too many words. If there were more words the reader’s attention may be lost or the words may distract the attention from the image. Instead of identifying the product as just an anti-perspirant, it is called a body fragrance as well. This is a pleasant way of describing the product and gives the impression of a sweet smell and this is appealing to the reader. Overall the advertisement suggests to the reader that the user of this product will become like a goddess. This means they will be more confident, powerful and attractive. These attributes are very appealing to the target audience for this advertisement. It gives the impression of worship and adoration towards the woman in the picture and this is the type of respect the reader may aspire to.

  Hello everybody. To start off I would like to say thank you to everyone here for coming, because if it wasn’t for all of you this day wouldn’t be so special. I would like to give a special thanks to my parents for getting me involved in boy scouts, mr.mac, mr.beteyyman, mr.deangles, and all the other leaders for leading my troop, and the scouts that helped me complete my Eagle Scout project. From the start to the end boy Scouts has shaped me as the person that I am today, and without Boy Scouts I wouldn’t be the person that I am. Not knowing where Scouting would lead me, I joined the troop due to many interests such as having fun. It all started when I was about 7 years old and walked into the elks lodge to have my first meeting as a tiger scout. From tiger scouts on I decided that I really liked the scouting experience and would continue on the whole journey. Racing boats in the rain gutter regatta, and racing cars in the pine wood derby were just a few of t he events early on. Time had passed earning belt loops, camping some, and learning wilderness survival tips, and before I knew it Webloes 2 was completed and I had a decision to make. I decided that I would cross over to boy Scouts and shoot for the goal of my Eagle Scout. Anxiously waiting at the table for my name to called, a member from the order of the arrow dressed up as an American Indian came over to me and walked me to the front of the building and over the bridge. I was then welcomed by the boy Scouts and given a troop 2540 handkerchief and hat. I decided that I would be one of the kids to go to all the meeting, trips, and scouting events.   One of my very first memories was the camping trip to rickets Glenn in Pennsylvania. The scenery of waterfalls and hiking through the wilderness hit me immediately that I loved the idea of camping and couldn’t wait to go on the next trip. As time progressed learning how to cook, pitch tents, tie knots, first aid, and physical fitness, I was moving through the ranks very quickly. Some events such as community service taught me to always give back to the community, and to take leadership roles in the troop showed me how to be a good leaders and not a follower. My most memorable camping trips were the 2 out of the 4 high adventure trips that I completed. The National Jamboree in Arlington Virginia celebrated the 100 years of scouting, and the most memorable part of this trip was getting Shaun Whites autograph. Hiking through the wilderness at Philmont Scout Reservation was an amazing espicially hiking up mt.baldy and catching mini bears in our bear bags to  pass time at cam p. Boy Scouts has meant so much to me and has helped me discover what I like to do through the 27 merit badges that I earned over the years. In this I will determine that teens aren’t the problem in today’s society, in fact the crime rate of juveniles has decreased, in addition the juvenile laws should be more lenient. The juvenile justice system was established in the U.S. the early 20th century due to the fact that they thought children were different from adults and the state should take responsibility on protecting and rehabilitating young offenders (Sanborn and Salerno). A juvenile is a youth at or below the upper age of original jurisdiction in a State, basically most states set it at age seventeen. In the past twenty years, youth crime rates have decreased but the public’s perception has caused the dismantling of the juvenile court system and tougher crime legislation, like trying children as adults and increasing incarceration as the solution to juvenile delinquency. Until the end of the 19th century juveniles were tried as adults and were also housed with men and women, sane and insane both. Then came the doctrine parens patriae (the State as Parent) which established the new right for the state to intervene and to provide protection for children whose parents did not provide adequate care or supervision. The media surrounding rare school shootings and other violent crime by youth offenders has succeeded in scaring the public. There was less than a one in two million chance of being killed in a school in America in 1998-1999, yet 71% of Americans felt that a school shooting was likely in their community (The Center of Juvenile Justice and Criminal Justice). Teenagers show either the larger declines or smaller increases (depending on crime category) in rates of serious offending compared to adults. The youngest teens and children show the largest declines in crimes of any age group, foretelling a law abiding coming generation (National Center for Juvenile Justice). From 1985 to the early 1990s, the number of teenagers arrested for murder nearly tripled before declining sharply in the mid- and late 1990s. By failing to mention key facts, authorities have seriously presented this trend as showing todays generation to be more prone to slaughter. Baron asks why do juveniles commit crimes? Family members, friends, and peers are all influences. It is sometimes accompanied by a desire for material things, fashion, peer pressure, cash and more. At times, the demands of wants and needs are intensified by a society that consists of high mobility, social change, and is materialistic. Also, social changes can create anxiety and disillusionment for adolescents and thus they commit delinquent acts. All juvenile delinquent behaviors are influenced not only by what goes on in the environment in which juveniles live, but also by what they observe in adults, what they listen to, learn from peer groups, parents, relatives, and society at large. Juvenile delinquency is not an inherent human condition, but rather is learned through association, imitation, observation, pressure, needs, wants, influence and desires (Krisberg). Youths who violate the law are no longer guaranteed special treatment simply because they are young. As of now no state has formally abolished the juvenile courts exclusive jurisdiction over young offenders, but every state in the country has taken major steps in that direction. It’s very likely that the states will ultimately abolish the concept of delinquency and that all law violations by young people will one day be handled in criminal court. What this means is the day may come when a crime is a crime is a crime, regardless of the offenders age (Caldwell, Vitacco, and Van Rybroek). This means that the death penalty will be used more often. Also the sentencing will not be lenient anymore. Then the juveniles will be placed with the general population in jail. They will be will all the murders and rapists. That will unfortunately be traumatizing to them. The odder inmates will take advantage of the juvenile offender. Juveniles have a better change of recovery and to just throw them into the criminal system is not the answer. The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention states there are many ways to prevent or decrease juvenile crime. Tribal Youth Program Training and Technical Assistance is one program that is designed to help tribal communities develop comprehensive, systemic approaches to reducing juvenile delinquency, violence, and child victimization and to increase the safety of tribal communities. There is a Youth Crime Watch of America’s new Youth Speakers’ Bureau that offers youth crime watchers the opportunity to teach and train in their local area and around the country. It also gives youth the tools to design their own solutions to the problems of crime, violence, and drugs (Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention). There is this program called the Title V Community Prevention Grants Program that focuses on reducing risks and enhancing protective factors to prevent youth at risk of becoming delinquent from entering the juvenile justice system and to intervene with first-time and no serious offenders to keep them out of the juvenile justice system. High School Seniors Start NOW on your Letters of Recommendation (LORs)! What was your favorite class in high school?   What class did you do best in?   Who was your favorite teacher?   How well do you know your guidance counselor?   Who knows you the best (both adults and fellow students)?   Who will write you the best recommendation? These are questions to answer now! Once you have your answers, make a list of the people who would be your best recommenders. After identifying your best recommenders, ask them if they are willing to write you a letter of recommendation.   Ask in particular  if they will write you a strong one.   If they can’t, see if there’s someone on your list who can. Teachers will appreciate having as long as possible to work on your LORs.  Ã‚  Get a leg up by approaching them now!
